Hello NW1,

If reinstalling your operating system did not help, it may indicate that the issue wasn't caused by the Windows* update. 

It is possible for one of the modules (wi-fi, or bluetooth®) to fail while the other does not. If reseating the adapter doesn't bring it back from the dead, then hardware replacement will be your best option.

To avoid compatibility issues, we always recommend purchasing the replacement part directly from your computer manufacturer whenever possible.

Hello again,

 

Back with the updates, the screenshot with the "netsh wlan show interface" command is attached and also a picture with the 5Ghz options in the router, maybe that helps in some way.

After enabling QoS, the speeds will fall back to around 100 mbps, so after a couple tests with the same results and restarts (both the laptop and router) decided to go back and disable it, this way at least getting the original 141/135 mbps speeds.

Here @manually set your wireless channel - does it matter what channels to try,  and/or is it necessary to change the bandwith as well (four available options: 20/40/80, 20, 40 and 80)?

In the wireless mode menu we got Auto, N only, N/AC mixed and finally Legacy.

Not sure if I should list all the available control channels as well?

Hello Zen18,

It doesn't matter what channel you try, but we do recommend choosing a non-overlapping one (36, 40, 44, 48, 149, 153, 157 and 161). You can try setting the control channel to 48 and the extension to 153, for example.

As far as channel width, 20/40/80 will normally allow your router to choose. It should result in your adapter connecting to the highest supported mode (80MHz, in this case). However, for troubleshooting purposes, we can try setting this to 80 MHz. If other devices start having issues, return to the original setting.

20 MHz = uses one channel only
40 MHz = bonds two channels together
80 MHz = bonds four channels together.

Channel bonding increases the data rate because data rate is directly proportional to channel bandwidth.

Since you're already connecting to 802.11ac, there should be no need to touch the wireless mode.

We understand your adapter's performance has recently dropped and you're looking for additional troubleshooting to determine if it's a hardware issue.

We would like to take a look at the following information before suggesting any more troubleshooting:
 

  1. If you connect to a different wireless network, does the adapter perform poorly as well?
  2. Could you please share an Intel® System Support Utility report. 
       
    1. Download the latest Intel® SSU
    2.  
    3. While connected to your WiFi network, run the scan for "everything."
    4.  
    5. Save and name the report.
  3. Also an interfaces output. 
       
    1. Right click your start menu icon and select Command Prompt from the list.
    2.  
    3. Enter: netsh wlan show interface
    4.  
    5. Save a screenshot using the snipping tool (In the search box on the taskbar, type and open the Snipping Tool).

For example: "7021 - Connection telemetry fields and analysis usage" [event id 7021] (24% of the Netwtw06 events). It's usefulness is debatable...

 

But "7077 - Intel proprietary" [event id 7023] represent 32% of the Netwtw06 events. Does this mean something useful for you?

Nothing possible in Powershell, no way to deal with this issue removing only the interesting even ids.

Remove-EventLog or Limit-EventLog doesn't bring any viable solution.

So Intel, the ball's in your court.

Hello escape75,

You should be able to connect using either band and still operate in 802.11ac. 

Using the 802.11n radio will make you more vulnerable to RF interference as well as further limit your maximum connection rate. A lower connection rate will result in more frequent disconnects due to signal degradation.

Ideally, you should be able to connect to 2.4 GHz in 802.11ac.

If this is not something you wish to address, we can still make the following suggestions:

1. Power Options:           
    - Go to control panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Set to High Performance and apply the default settings. 
    - Check the Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings > Wireless Adapter > Power Saving Mode and make sure both "On battery" and "Plugged in" are set to Maximum performance.
2. Advanced Adapter Settings:
    - Right click on Windows* Icon and choose Device manager > Network Adapters > Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265 > Right click and select Properties.
    - Go to the Advanced tab. Note: these settings will be named differently if you're using an older driver.
        - Channel Width for 2.4GHz: 20 MHz
        - Roaming Aggressiveness: 1. Lowest
        - Disable all "Wake on.." settings if like most of us, you don't use WoWLAN.
3. Try by manually choosing a wireless channel on your router. The recommended non-overlapping 2.4 GHz channels are 1, 6, and 11.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will do more testing in 2.4 ghz band after changing the power settings.

I have already put my router on channels 3 or 4, after scanning the spectrum for interference.

 

When using 5 ghz band I can confirm that there's no issues, however the card supports both, so

saying that I should be using 5 ghz and not 2.4 ghz is like saying you should be driving your ferrari

always over 100 kph because below that speed the engine might stall

 

The point is that I will not always be able to control the routers I'm connected to, so 2.4 ghz should work.

 

As far as 802.11ac vs 802.11n, by definition 802.11ac is only available on 5 ghz ...

"Keeping 802.11ac constrained to the 5 GHz band was a reasonable decision on the

part of the working group, largely because we have done everything we can with the

2.4 GHz band. We have squeezed just about every bit out of every Hertz of spectrum

that we can, so it's time to find new territory"

 

Like I said, I will do more testing, but again the issues I'm seeing on 2.4 ghz

are NOT related to interference, and NOT related to signal strength, because they will

happen while there's a background download doing 1 MB/s, and yet new website requests

will fail while the download is continuing, and then resume on their own 20 seconds later

Finally we have a breakthrough.

As you recommended the channel bandwith was set to 80 MHz, also the control channel to 48, but the extension channel was left with the 'Auto' option, cannot change that.

Wireless mode also left on 'Auto'.

With these settings the speedtest shows a pretty good jump from 140 mbps to 355 mbps.

It's not the maximum speed, but actually it's much better now, it's a big difference anyways.

In case you got any more tips or tricks, would happily try them, but if not these are pretty good speeds for the laptop.

wireless-AC 9260 truncated packets on ubuntu

Hi, I am using a laptop with wireless-AC 9260 on ubuntu

 

WiFi manages to connect to my access pointin WPA2 (see EAPOL message success below), but it apparently fails to get an IP address. I have tried with many access points and android hotspot.

 

Looking at tcpdump traces, it seems that the wifi interface receives a bunch of truncated IP messages in response to the bootp request.

 

How do I check if I have the right driver version, and right firmware?

 

All the relevant information is below I think.

Hello Zen18,

We're glad to hear that manually setting your channel bandwidth helped.

Keep in mind that your maximum download speed is roughly half of your connection rate. Download speed measurements don't account for network overhead (encryption, routing), user congestion and other environmental factors, which is why this is always a smaller number.

You cant write just "7077 - Intel proprietary" in the event log.

 

We are talking about the driver to "Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260" version 20.30.1.2 dated 10-01-2018 (day, month, year).

 

Please search the source code for the driver for the text "7077 - Intel proprietary", and solve the problem.
